Partnership between JL Brierley and Paxman breathes new life into historic site

Huddersfield’s health innovation scene is set for a major boost as two long-established local companies embark on a transformative partnership.

John L Brierley Ltd and Paxman Coolers Ltd have announced the development of a cutting-edge manufacturing and research headquarters at the historic Turnbridge Mills site on Quay Street.

Situated in the heart of England’s third HealthTech and Digital Investment Zone and adjacent to the University of Huddersfield’s National Health Innovation Campus, the project will revitalise the site while securing Huddersfield’s position at the forefront of medical technology.

Combining heritage with innovation

The new 27,000-square-foot facility will serve as a state-of-the-art headquarters for Paxman, known globally for its pioneering scalp cooling technology that reduces hair loss during chemotherapy.

It will include cryotherapy research labs, digital manufacturing spaces, engineering R&D zones, and office facilities, helping the firm expand its footprint and capabilities.

For JL Brierley, the project marks a meaningful revival of the historic Turnbridge Mills site, which saw a downturn in activity following the decline of the textile industry.

The firm continues to hire from within Huddersfield and across the wider West Yorkshire region, tapping into a rich talent pool supported by strong local universities and manufacturing expertise.

Heritage meets sustainability

A core element of the project is the preservation of the site’s heritage. While JL Brierley will retain occupancy of the Grade II listed buildings on site, the new construction will integrate sustainable practices to minimise environmental impact while celebrating the site’s industrial legacy.

With the development supporting the goals of the Station to Stadium Enterprise Corridor and the West Yorkshire Investment Zone, Huddersfield is poised to become a key player in the UK’s MedTech sector.
