A state-of-the-art facility for Kirklees children with additional needs has been officially inaugurated, marking a significant milestone in efforts to enhance support for families with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Enhancing Education for Autistic Children

Woodley Moor, part of the Woodley School and College located in Crosland Moor, is dedicated to educating autistic children of primary school age.

This new facility is a crucial element in Kirklees council’s ambitious multi-million-pound investment to improve SEND provisions and increase the availability of specialist school places across the district.

Currently, Woodley School is undergoing a relocation and expansion process. The newly opened facility allows the school to accommodate 25 additional children ahead of their move to a custom-built school in Almondbury.

Tailored to Meet Complex Needs

Developed in close collaboration between the council and the school, Woodley Moor is specifically designed to cater to children with complex autism.

The facility includes zoned classrooms with sensory-friendly lighting, a thematic learning environment, a therapy room, and a life skills room.

Additionally, outdoor play areas and a secure drop-off zone ensure both educational and logistical needs are met comprehensively.

The official opening was a celebratory event, with pupils, governors, council representatives, and school leaders coming together to showcase the impressive facilities.

Commitment to Inclusive Education

Cllr Amanda Pinnock, Cabinet member for Education and Communities, expressed her pride in the new development: “This is a proud moment for Kirklees Council as we take another step forward in ensuring all children can access the resources and support they need to thrive.

“The opening of Woodley Moor highlights our commitment to transforming SEND provision in our area. We are excited to see the difference it will make to the lives of children and their families.”

Woodley School’s main site is located off Dog Kennel Bank in Huddersfield, but further developments are limited by the current location.

Woodley Moor serves as a ‘satellite’ facility, maintaining the same high educational standards as the main school.

Cllr Viv Kendrick, Cabinet member for Children’s Services, highlighted the importance of local access to special education: “This new facility reflects our continuing commitment to meeting local needs in local schools, ensuring more children have access to special education closer to their homes.”

Positive Reception from the Community

The facility welcomed its first pupils in November, and both children and parents have responded positively. Headteacher Adrian Sugden shared his enthusiasm for the new facility: “The students have settled well and are really enjoying the calm, new and controllable environment.

“Parents have told me how delighted they are, and we would like to thank everyone for their support and help opening the centre, a provision that will make a positive difference to our students and their families.”

A Vision for the Future

Woodley Moor is a vital component of Kirklees Council’s strategy to improve SEND provision and help all learners reach their full potential. It serves as a precursor to the future state-of-the-art campus planned in Almondbury.

In addition to Woodley Moor, the council is also investing in the rebuilding and relocating of Joseph Norton Academy, further enhancing special school provisions.
