Woodley School and College to relocate and expand with modern facilities supporting inclusive education

Plans have been officially approved for a new, purpose-built Woodley School and College, designed to provide a high-quality learning environment for autistic pupils aged 5 to 19 in Kirklees.

Currently operating across multiple buildings at Dog Kennel Bank in Huddersfield, the school has gradually expanded over time but now faces restrictions that limit future development on its existing site.

The approved plans will see Woodley School relocate to a new site on Fernside Avenue, Almondbury.

The relocation will allow the school to grow its capacity to approximately 180 pupils and offer a significantly improved, modern environment tailored to meet the needs of learners with additional support requirements.

A Milestone for Specialist Education

Work to clear the new Fernside Avenue site began in May, and construction preparations are now underway.

Councillor Jane Rylah, Cabinet Member for Education, welcomed the news, describing the planning approval as a major step forward. She said: “Securing planning permission is a significant milestone for this vital project.

“Woodley School delivers excellent education and support, and this new purpose-built facility will allow us to extend that offer to even more children and young people.

“The new school will provide a tailored environment where pupils can thrive and reach their full potential.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the build progress and the positive impact this investment will bring to families across Kirklees.”

Transforming SEND Provision Across the District

This development is part of Kirklees Council’s broader commitment to enhancing support for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

In addition to the Woodley School project, work is also progressing on the rebuild and relocation of Joseph Norton Academy, which caters to pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs.

Further investment is being made to increase the number of SEND places in schools across the district, ensuring more families can access specialist support close to home.
