Transport leaders to consider next steps for stalled development that promises better connections and economic growth

Plans to get the White Rose Rail Station project back on track are set to be presented to regional leaders next week, in a move that could significantly improve travel and economic prospects for residents in Huddersfield and surrounding areas.

The station, located on the busy Leeds to Huddersfield rail line, is being built near the White Rose Business Park and just a short walk from the White Rose Shopping Centre.

Once complete, it promises to enhance rail connectivity across West Yorkshire, reduce congestion, and support regeneration in South Leeds – all of which could open up new opportunities for commuters, businesses and residents in Huddersfield.

Partnership Project Nears Major Milestone

Delivered in partnership, the White Rose Station project is promoted and jointly funded by Munroe K and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, with Spencer Rail serving as the principal contractor.

Work began on site in spring 2022, but construction came to a halt in spring 2024 due to on-site challenges that impacted both the schedule and budget.

Now, at a meeting on Thursday 8th May, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority will consider a proposal to approve additional funding.

This would allow work to continue towards completing the station and addressing what has been described as the project’s “legacy issues”.

A New Era for Regional Connectivity

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, has voiced her support for seeing the station completed as soon as possible, emphasising the positive impact it could have across the region.

“I want to see the station open to passengers as soon as possible as it will improve connectivity to South Leeds, attract significant investment and act as a catalyst for the area’s regeneration,” she said.

“If agreed, this decision will represent a major step towards resuming construction as we work with both the Department for Transport and Network Rail to confirm funding and put in place a delivery partnership.

“By upgrading our rail links and investing in public transport, we’re creating a better-connected West Yorkshire.”

Improved regional connectivity means faster, easier access between Huddersfield and key economic hubs in West Yorkshire, which could lead to more job opportunities and enhanced services for local communities.

Funding Challenges and Completion Plans

Despite £26.5 million already being invested – including £12 million from the Transforming Cities Fund and £5 million from the Leeds Public Transport Infrastructure Programme – the station is currently only 70% complete.

Key elements still to be delivered include:

• External cladding and interior fit-out

• Mechanical and electrical systems, including lift installation

• External and operational rail works, such as signalling and customer information systems

Over the past year, project partners have been assessing the financial position and developing a strategy to complete construction.

Several outstanding issues, referred to as “blockers”, have been identified and are expected to be resolved in the coming weeks.

Cottingley Closure and Looking Ahead

Completion of the White Rose Station will also involve the closure of the nearby Cottingley station. Discussions with Network Rail are ongoing as part of the wider Transpennine Route Upgrade.

A detailed proposal on how to remobilise the project and finalise costs is being prepared. If approved, work could resume later this year, with the station potentially opening by January 2027.
