The University of Huddersfield’s New National Health Innovation Campus is set to revolutionise healthcare in Huddersfield and beyond, addressing pressing health challenges in Yorkshire and the Humber while advancing innovation across the UK and internationally.

The transformative project builds on the institution’s strong foundation in professional courses, pioneering research, and partnerships with leading health and care organisations.

Tackling Regional Health Challenges

Yorkshire and the Humber face significant health issues, including the third-lowest life expectancy for men and women, the highest levels of obesity, and the second-highest rate of infant deaths in England. The National Health Innovation Campus will tackle these challenges head-on, working collaboratively with regional stakeholders to improve outcomes and set new standards in healthcare delivery.

Situated along the M62 corridor, the Campus will serve communities across West and South Yorkshire as well as Greater Manchester, providing a vital hub for healthcare services, education, and innovation.

Honouring Daphne Steele

The first building on the Southgate site has been named after Daphne Steele, the UK’s first Black matron. Originally from Guyana, Daphne emigrated to the UK in the 1940s and made a lasting impact on the nursing profession.

This building, named in her honour, will house public-facing facilities, including award-winning student-led clinics, and serve as a centre for entrepreneurial academic activity. With a focus on strong public-private partnerships, the building will also feature specialist clinical teaching facilities to support workforce development and enhance the regional health economy.
