Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-ruling monarch, has died aged, Buckingham Palace has confirmed. She was 96 years old.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace said the Queen ‘died peacefully’ this afternoon at Balmoral.
“The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow” the statement continued.
Queen Elizabeth II is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Prince Charles, the Queen’s eldest son, will become king. His eldest son, Prince William, becomes the heir to the throne.
The Queen came to the throne in 1952, reigning as head of state for 70 years.
