Heritage Shop Front development underway to transform John William Street

A new regeneration project is underway to transform six shop fronts on Huddersfield’s John William Street, bringing them back in line with the heritage of the area.

The scheme, delivered in partnership with B&M Properties – owners of numbers 19 to 33a John William Street – will see updated signage and traditional shop front designs that restore the original character of these Grade II listed buildings.

As well as protecting the long-term use of the buildings, the project supports the wider Huddersfield Blueprint, the council’s ambitious plan to create a town centre where more people want to live, work and visit.

Cllr Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration, said: “I am very passionate about the improvement works for John William Street. Installing new shop fronts to retain Kirklees’ remarkable heritage will bring a fitting, new look to the street.

“Huddersfield is made up of buildings filled with breathtaking characteristics and unique history, incorporating this into the participating shops will strongly improve the centre.

“As with most of our blueprints across Huddersfield and beyond, this project will have considerable benefits, enhancing the visitor experience making the high street more attractive as well as supporting economic growth for local businesses.”

Major Investment Secured

The scheme has been made possible thanks to a £625,329 grant from the Huddersfield Heritage Led Regeneration Scheme (HLRS), secured in December 2023.

The works will replace six modern metal-framed shop fronts – which do not match the historic and architectural significance of the buildings – with timber shop fronts featuring traditional detailing, stall risers, and fascia boards displaying each business’s name.

Minimising Disruption

To reduce the impact on businesses and shoppers, work will be carried out in phases, with scaffolding and hoarding put up on three shops at a time.

Clear signage will be in place to let customers know that shops remain open for business throughout the works.
