Two neglected and malnourished cats, Anakin and Ahsoka, have found happiness in a new home after being rescued from dire conditions in Hull, East Yorkshire.

The inseparable duo were discovered living in squalor, huddled together on a radiator, by the RSPCA following a tip-off from a concerned member of the public.

Shocking Conditions

RSPCA Inspector Natalie Hill was taken aback by the state of the cats when she visited the property.

Anakin, a male black and white cat, was extremely underweight and almost bald from his shoulders down.

He was too weak to move from the radiator. His companion, Ahsoka, a grey and white cat, was also in poor health.

The cats’ owner admitted she had not sought veterinary care for them. Anakin was rushed for emergency treatment, weighing just 2.2kg and in shock with a core temperature of 36.9°C.

He was treated for severe malnutrition, fur loss, fleas, and internal parasites. After two days in hospital on intravenous fluids, he began a strict feeding plan to regain weight.

On a follow-up visit, Natalie found that Ahsoka had also not been taken to a vet and was suffering from sickness, diarrhoea, and underweight.

She was immediately treated for fleas, worms, and malnutrition.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Once stabilised, Anakin and Ahsoka were transferred to the RSPCA Bridlington, Driffield and District Cattery.

Anakin, who initially hid and was fearful, had to be fed small meals six times a day due to his severe underweight.

Despite regular vet visits, he eventually gained weight and his fur grew back. He was adopted in October.

Ahsoka, initially shy and traumatised, also slowly regained trust and weight. After nearly a year of rehabilitation, she was ready for rehoming in January.

The same adopters who took in Anakin also adopted Ahsoka, reuniting the inseparable pair.

A Happy Home

Anakin and Ahsoka now thrive in the loving care of Holly Bowler and her partner Adam Coles in Brough, East Yorkshire.

Holly shared their journey of adopting the cats and their current joyous lives. Despite initial shyness and health issues, the cats have become affectionate and playful companions.

Anakin still requires a special diet due to intolerances, but both cats have brought immense joy to their new home.

Support the RSPCA’s Life-Saving Work

The RSPCA is highlighting Anakin and Ahsoka’s story as part of its Join The Christmas Rescue campaign, aimed at raising funds to help more animals in need.

The charity has reported a 25% increase in animal neglect cases this year and fears the situation will worsen as financial hardships rise during the winter months.

Inspector Natalie Hill emphasised the importance of timely veterinary care and praised the dedicated efforts of the RSPCA team in rehabilitating Anakin and Ahsoka.

She urged the public to support the RSPCA’s vital work in rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals.
