Slaithwaite Art Festival is a celebration of local and regional artists. There is a great creative buzz around the village at the moment and we want to bring all those artists together in the centre of our community. We want to look after our artists in The Colne Valley and we want the wider community to have access to the creative hub.
The Festival will also encourage our children to engage with art and raise awareness of our children’s creativity. A selection of children’s work from local schools will be on show as a preview to the wider Sheer Brilliance exhibition being run by Globe Arts Education in conjunction with the Yorkshire Sculpture Park National Education Archive of Children’s Art and the University of Huddersfield.
Slaithwaite Art Festival is running over the weekend of 13th-14th May 2017, across two venues: Slaithwaite Community Centre and Globe Arts Studio. The Community Centre on Bankgate will be open on both days, from 10am to 4pm on the Saturday and 10am to 3pm on the Sunday. Globe Arts Studio will be holding an open day on Sunday 14th May where visitors can see the resident artists at work and discover all about the visual arts classes, courses and training on offer at Globe Arts Studio.
The Festival will be host to a wide range of visual art, including printmaking, paintings, sculptures, photographs, ceramics, jewellery and textiles. There will be high quality work for sale which will be exhibited in our gallery space. There will also be artists at stalls all around the Centre who will be happy to chat about their work. Our demonstration room will host different artists throughout the weekend. Visitors will be able to see work in process such as printmaking, textile weaving, felting and marbling.
Slaithwaite Playgroup and Toddlers (SPlaT!), who are based in the Community Centre, will also be opening their doors with some great activities for school aged children and the younger artist.
Visitors will be able to wet their whistle and grab a light bite in our café before heading out to the playground to support our local community groups who will be joining us for the weekend.
Admission to this event will be free of charge to the public, though some of the activities and demonstrations on offer will incur a small charge.
We are grateful to have ByteBack Creative on board who are providing all the design work for our publicity free of charge. A shout of thanks also goes to Community Spirit for their donation and to WHSmiths who are supporting our children’s exhibition. We are still looking for further sponsorship from companies so that we can deliver a great event to the community and turn this into an annual event.
Slaithwaite Art Festival is being run by Slaithwaite Community Association in collaboration with local design company ByteBack Creative and with support from Globe Arts Education.
