As the festive season fades and New Year’s resolutions are already on shaky ground, there’s one big event to look forward to in 2025: the Slaithwaite Moonraking Festival!

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, this much-loved local tradition promises to be bigger and brighter than ever, thanks to funding from National Lottery players via The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Taking place from 14th to 22nd February during half-term week, the festival features lantern-making workshops and culminates in a magical parade.

But the fun doesn’t start there—organisers have unveiled seven exciting ways to get involved before the main event.

Whether you’re looking to volunteer, learn a new skill, or simply make new friends, here’s how you can be part of the celebrations.

Volunteer Performers Wanted

Something top secret is happening which needs 20 or 30 volunteer playful performers.

Previous experience performing is welcome but not essential – you’ll need to attend evening workshops and weekend rehearsals at The Watershed led by a pair of lovely physical theatre specialists from Kerfuffle Street Theatre.

All body shapes and fitness levels are welcome! Participants must be 16 years old or older.

Light Up the Parade as a Dancer

Organisers are looking for 20 illuminated dancers, aged 12 to 112, to join the parade.

All dance abilities, body types, and genders are welcome, with costumes provided.

Attend three 2-hour sessions to learn simple choreography and bring your moves to the illuminated streets.

Shadow Puppetry for Young Performers

Children aged 7–15 can join Watershed Workshops Youth Theatre to create shadow puppet stories with professional actor and storyteller Robin Simpson. Performances will pop up in village shops in the lead-up to the grand finale.

Calling All Cake Bakers!

Sweet treats keep the lantern workshops running smoothly. If you can bake cakes, buns, biscuits, or tarts, your contributions would be greatly appreciated.

Volunteer your baking skills to add extra sweetness to the festival.

Join the Stewarding Team

Help keep everyone safe during the parade by volunteering as a steward. You’ll attend a briefing workshop and play a vital role on the day of the event.

Be prepared for all weather, and in return, you’ll receive the organisers’ heartfelt thanks—and possibly a crown for your efforts!

Lantern-Making Volunteers Needed

Experienced in lantern-making? Share your skills by helping others craft their own creations.

Volunteers must attend a training day on 1st February and commit to at least two workshop sessions between 15th and 20th February.

Share Your Moonraking Memories

As part of the 40th birthday celebrations, the festival is archiving its rich history.

If you have photos, videos, or stories from past festivals, consider contributing to this heritage project.

Memory evenings will be held at The Watershed on the 21st and 28th of January, and 2nd of February from 7–9 pm.

Festival Chair Invites Community to Join the Fun

Susanna Meese, Chair of the Slaithwaite Moonraking Festival, said: “As soon as Christmas is over, the excitement for Moonraking begins! This year, we’re inviting everyone to get involved early. It’s a fantastic way to meet new people and contribute to a magical event that brings the community together.”

A Legend That Lives On

The festival celebrates the local tale of smugglers who cleverly avoided arrest by pretending to rake the moon’s reflection from a canal.

Since its inception in 1985, the event has become a beloved tradition, culminating in a spectacular night-time parade featuring handmade lanterns.

This year’s festival will also mark the launch of “Shop,” an 18-month project celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Carr Lane parade of shops in Slaithwaite village centre.
