Charity urges walkers to step up as hedgehogs and seal pups face peak rescue season
Wildlife enthusiasts across England and Wales are being encouraged to lace up their walking boots this October for the RSPCA’s ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ challenge, a nationwide fundraising effort to protect vulnerable animals.
The campaign comes at a crucial time for the charity. Last October marked the busiest month for hedgehog admissions in five years, while the autumn season also signals the start of ‘seal pup season’, when orphaned, underweight and struggling grey seals are frequently taken into RSPCA care.
A Challenge for Every Walker
Participants can choose between two distance tiers: 60 miles (96.6km) or the ‘Ultra Wild Challenge’ of 120 miles (193.1km), with the flexibility to complete the distance at their own pace and in their own location throughout October.
A fundraising target of £100 is suggested for each participant, money which will go directly towards the RSPCA’s frontline wildlife rescue and rehabilitation efforts.
Olivia Williams, Mass Participation Manager at the RSPCA, said: “Every hour, a wild animal needs our care, and we know that so many animal lovers want to help.
“That’s why we’re thrilled to be launching Walk on the Wild Side as a way for people to really make a difference and support our vital work.”
Real Lives Already Impacted
Even before October, the RSPCA’s wildlife centres have been busy. Last week, staff at the RSPCA West Hatch Wildlife Centre in Somerset took in two orphaned hoglets who are now receiving round-the-clock, hand-fed care.
These are just some of the hundreds of animals the charity expects to support this autumn as demand peaks.
What Participants Receive
Those who sign up will receive a welcome pack, including an RSPCA t-shirt, miles tracker, and wildlife spotting sheet
Early registrants will also receive a limited edition dog bandana, and anyone who raises £100 or more by 31 October will earn an exclusive medal.
Participants are also invited to join a dedicated Facebook community for advice, encouragement, and progress-sharing.
How to Get Involved
Taking part is simple. First, register online to receive your welcome pack, which will feature all the information needed to get started.
Then, if needed, start to prepare with some practice walks before October.
Once October rolls around, complete your chosen distance across the month. You can run as little or as much as you like each time, just make sure to reach the £100 goal to claim your medal.
Finally, be sure to share your journey and celebrate your progress!
Olivia added: “We’re excited to see people sign up for the challenge through this month, ready to begin on 1 October, and we can’t thank people enough for joining us in this fantastic event.
“Every penny raised will directly contribute to the RSPCA’s mission of caring for wildlife across England and Wales, and make a huge difference to animals.”
