By Joshua Robinson –
The Annapurna Indian Dance company presents A Tree in Time: a dance and storytelling session with live Tabla, inspired by the true story of Saalumarada Thimmakka, an Indian woman who has dedicated her life to planting trees.
Artists include internationally renowned Tabla Mastro Sanju Sahai, musician Kirpal Singh Panesar, and Kathak dancer Jaymini Sahai with writer Ian Clyaton as the storyteller.
Saalumarada was born in a remote village and did not receive a formal education. An active campaigner on afforestation, she has over her life planted 8,000+ trees, including 385 banyan trees, the national tree of India. She used to carry pails of water for over four kilometres to water the saplings every day, demonstrating a selfless dedication towards trees and the environment. Now 112 years old, Saalumarada was conferred with the Padma Shri award by the government of India in 2019.
