Hospice praises dedication, resilience and compassion of nurses supporting families across Kirklees

This Nurses Day, The Kirkwood is celebrating the compassion, professionalism and dedication of the nurses who continue to provide vital care and support to local people and families living with life-limiting illness across Kirklees.

The hospice said its nursing team remains at the heart of delivering outstanding care, offering not only expert clinical support but also comfort, dignity and reassurance during some of life’s most difficult moments.

‘At the very heart of everything we do’

This year’s Nurses Day carries added significance for the hospice following a challenging period marked by financial pressures and difficult organisational decisions.

Despite those challenges, The Kirkwood said its nurses have continued to demonstrate exceptional resilience and commitment to patient care.

Director of Clinical Services at The Kirkwood, Lynne Hall-Bentley, said: “Our nurses are at the very heart of everything we do. They go above and beyond to provide outstanding care, comfort and dignity to patients and their families during some of life’s most challenging moments.

“Over the last year, The Kirkwood has faced some incredibly difficult challenges and had to make some very tough decisions, but throughout it all, our nurses have continued to deliver services to our patients and their families.

“Their dedication and commitment have been inspiring, and they continue to embody the very best of The Kirkwood every single day.”

Going beyond patient care

The hospice highlighted how the impact of its nurses extends far beyond patient care on its In-Patient Unit and in the community, with many staff members also taking on major fundraising challenges to support the organisation.

Among them is dedicated nurse Alice, whose passion and commitment have helped showcase the meaningful difference hospice care can make to patients and families.

Meanwhile, Angela has marked a decade of fundraising through The Kirkwood Starlight Walk, demonstrating how hospice nursing becomes more than simply a profession.

Fundraising efforts ‘inspire communities’

The same spirit was reflected in a team of nurses who completed the demanding Derbyshire Three Peaks challenge, raising more than £7,000 for patient care while continuing their emotionally demanding clinical roles.

Other members of the nursing team have also taken part in fundraising efforts ranging from skydives to personal endurance challenges, all inspired by a shared determination to protect and enhance care for future patients and families.

The Kirkwood said Nurses Day is not only an opportunity to recognise nurses everywhere, but also a chance to thank a team whose compassion and dedication continue to make a lasting difference to families across the region.
