Free event to celebrate and share the power of community heritage

The Community Archives and Heritage Group (CAHG) is hosting its first-ever conference in the North of England, and there’s still time to secure your free place.

The 2025 CAHG Annual Conference, titled Community Voices, Community Heritage – Preserving, Sharing and Celebrating Diverse Histories and Traditions, will take place on Thursday 19 June at the University of Huddersfield from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm, with registration from 10 am and optional tours of the University’s Heritage Quay archives from 4:30 pm.

This vibrant event is completely free to attend and includes a complimentary vegetarian lunch, a full programme of presentations, skills workshops, and networking opportunities, making it an unmissable date for anyone involved in or passionate about community heritage and archives.

A Celebration of Diverse Voices

This year’s conference marks a milestone for CAHG as it takes place in the North of England for the first time.

The event will explore how communities take charge of their heritage by preserving both tangible and intangible cultural traditions, from documents and photographs to oral histories, crafts, and songs.

The conference will feature a strong line-up of presentations from community groups across the North and beyond, showcasing projects that engage local people with their histories, both online and in-person.

While the emphasis is on grassroots initiatives, some sessions will also highlight productive collaborations between communities and institutions like museums, libraries, and archives.

Get Involved: Submit a Digital Poster

As part of the event, CAHG is also issuing a Call for Digital Posters, giving community groups the chance to share their stories on a large screen in the conference’s central “Market Place” space.

This hub of activity will host networking, refreshments, and discussions throughout the day.

Poster Guidelines:

• Use CAHG’s widescreen PowerPoint template (available via the event webpage)

• Include your group’s name, activities, and contact information

• Use bold visuals and clear, accessible text (minimum 24pt font)

• Submit your poster by Friday 13 June 2025 to m.trimble@scottisharchives.org.uk with the subject line POSTER CAHG CONFERENCE 2025

You don’t have to attend to participate – your poster will still be displayed and seen by a wide audience of community practitioners, heritage professionals, and academics.
