Fossils, fun, and family discovery day promises hands-on adventure beneath the surface

Get ready to dig deep into the wonders of the Earth as Geology Rocks returns to the National Coal Mining Museum for England on Saturday 26 April – and it’s completely free!

Back in partnership with the Yorkshire Geological Society (YGS), this jam-packed day of family-friendly exploration promises to celebrate the secrets beneath our feet, from dazzling minerals and fossils to the rich geological history that shaped the coal mining industry.

Discover, Dig, and Delight in Rocks and Fossils

Visitors of all ages will be treated to hands-on experiences with incredible fossils, minerals, and rocks throughout the museum.

Watch live demonstrations of rock-cutting and polishing, and even bring along your own mysterious stones for experts to examine.

If you’ve ever wondered what that pebble from your garden might really be, now’s your chance to find out.

Families can also try their hand at fossil cutting to unlock the ancient secrets hidden within.

New for 2025: Step into a Giant Story Shell

This year’s event introduces a brand-new feature for younger visitors – Barnsley Libraries’ travelling Story Shell, a colossal inflatable seashell created by international artists Steve Messam and Suzie Devey.

At 9 metres long and 4.5 metres high, it’s a magical storytelling space perfect for children aged 5 and under, offering enchanting tales in a truly unforgettable setting.

Live Shows, Tours, and Curious Characters

Among the day’s many highlights are:

• The Rock Showman returns with a thrilling show full of fossils, dinosaurs, and jaw-dropping geology.

• The Rock ‘n’ Coal Show, where you’ll discover how coal formed and learn how geologists find it.

• Surface tours offering a close-up look at rock and coal seams across the historic colliery site.

• Meet the pioneers of science, including Father of Geology William Smith and Marie Curie, brought to life through engaging performances and scientific experiments.

There will also be themed crafts, including the chance to make your very own fossil to take home as a souvenir.

Afternoon Talks and Hidden Stories in Stone

In the afternoon, YGS will host a series of short, engaging talks exploring local geology and the best fossil-hunting spots around Caphouse Colliery.

Whether you’re a budding young scientist or simply curious about the planet’s prehistoric past, you’ll find something to spark your interest.

A Day of Discovery for All Ages

Lynn Dunning, CEO of the National Coal Mining Museum for England, shared her excitement: “We’re delighted to again be joining forces with Yorkshire Geological Society to offer our visitors a fun-packed day of exciting exhibits and interactive experiences, learning about the ground beneath our feet.
