Two University of Huddersfield students, Mawda Hussein and Keoni Bediakoh, have shared their experiences of working with Kirklees Local TV (KLTV), highlighting the impact of the organisation’s hands-on work experience programme and its strong links with the university.
KLTV has now supported placements for over 100 students, offering practical opportunities across filming, editing, presenting, and production roles within a live local media environment.
The long-standing relationship with the University of Huddersfield continues to provide students with valuable industry exposure and career development opportunities.
Working on real community-focused platforms
During their placements, both Mawda and Keoni contributed to key KLTV initiatives, including the Talking Health TV and Cultural Leaders Group platforms.
These projects focus on important community issues around health and culture, giving students the chance to work on meaningful content that reaches local audiences.
Their involvement included supporting production work, developing creative ideas, and gaining insight into how community-driven media is planned and delivered.
Mawda and Keoni were also involved with KLTV’s work with the university’s Cultures Of Film project, which explores the intersectionality of people, places, culture and heritage through local filmmaking.
Building confidence and industry skills
Mawda reflected on how the experience helped her develop practical media skills and better understand the demands of the industry, while Keoni highlighted the value of working in a real production setting and contributing to projects with a clear social impact.
KLTV’s work experience programme continues to play a key role in preparing students for careers in media, combining technical training with real editorial and production experience.
