Upperhead Row Car Park to Close for Six Months as Refurbishment Enters Final Phase

Major safety and accessibility upgrades planned ahead of January 2026 closure

Upperhead Row Car Park, located above Huddersfield Bus Station, is set to enter the final stage of a major refurbishment programme, with a six-month closure planned to allow essential work to be completed safely.

The car park will close from Monday 5 January 2026 while the remaining upgrades are carried out.

Final stage of essential works

During the closure, work will focus on key safety and access features, including lifts, stairwells and fire exits. The entrance and exit ramps will also be upgraded.

When the car park reopens, users can expect a noticeably improved environment.

Planned changes include refreshed and brighter lighting, clearer signage, enhanced CCTV coverage, and upgraded fire and emergency lighting, all aimed at making the facility safer and easier to use.

Improvements already completed

Significant changes have already been made since refurbishment work began earlier this year.

The number of accessible parking spaces has more than doubled, increasing from 11 to 23.

Each level of the car park now has its own colour and number to help drivers remember where they have parked.

Clear pedestrian routes have been introduced to improve safety and ease of movement, while parking bays have been widened to better accommodate modern vehicles.

The exterior of the building has also been repainted, improving the overall appearance of the site.

Council response

Councillor Moses Crook, Deputy Leader of Kirklees Council and Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “This investment means safer, more modern parking at one of Huddersfield’s busiest car parks.

“It will make a real difference to everyone who uses it and strengthens the wider parking offer across the town.

“Thank you to all commuters for your patience and understanding while we get these essential improvements done.

“Looking ahead, 2026 is shaping up to be a big year for transport in Kirklees.

“Major projects are set to begin, including the multi-million-pound upgrade of Huddersfield Bus Station as we prepare for bus franchising with the publicly owned Weaver bus network, improvements to transport links in both Dewsbury and Huddersfield town centres, and ongoing work to enhance the West Yorkshire rail network through Network Rail’s TransPennine Route Upgrade.
