Huddersfield academy seeks independent Member to provide strategic oversight and support long-term success

King James’s School in Huddersfield has announced a vacancy for a voluntary Member, offering a significant opportunity for individuals to contribute to improving life chances for children and young people.

The school’s trust is seeking a principled, strategic and independent individual to join at a constitutional level, helping to ensure strong governance and accountability across the organisation.

Providing Oversight at the Highest Level

Members play a vital role within an academy trust, sitting above the Board of Governors.

Comparable to shareholders in a company, they are responsible for ensuring the trust remains true to its charitable aims while maintaining effective governance.

The position follows the principle of “eyes on, hands off”, meaning Members do not engage in day-to-day management but instead provide high-level assurance and hold Governors to account.

In line with national guidance, most Members are required to remain independent of the governing board.

Responsibilities and Authority

Those appointed will be responsible for protecting the trust’s charitable objectives, overseeing governance standards, and reviewing audited accounts at the Annual General Meeting.

Members also hold formal powers, including appointing or removing Governors and auditors, amending governing documents, and intervening where governance falls below expectations.

These powers are used sparingly and always in the best interests of pupils.

What the Role Involves

The commitment is relatively light but impactful. Members are expected to attend at least one annual meeting, alongside occasional additional meetings if required.

The role also involves reviewing key documents, staying informed about the trust’s strategic direction, and offering constructive challenge.

Importantly, Members do not take part in operational decision-making, staff management, or routine Governor meetings.

Skills and Experience Encouraged

The trust is welcoming applications from individuals with strong integrity, independence of thought and a commitment to public accountability.

While prior governance experience is advantageous, it is not essential.

Applicants with expertise in areas such as strategic governance, financial oversight, digital resilience, or estates and sustainability are particularly encouraged to apply.

Although unpaid, the role offers a meaningful opportunity to influence the future of education at King James’s School and to support positive outcomes for young people across the community.
