Various teams from the ‘Our Cultural Heart’ Project help restore Kilner Bank and explore Huddersfield Riverside Nature Park

A foggy November morning set the scene for a lively day of environmental action as EPIKS (Environmental Projects in Kirklees) welcomed a dedicated group of corporate volunteers to Huddersfield Riverside Nature Park.

Staff from BAM UK and Ireland, along with volunteers from Phoenix Brickwork, EDSB Compliance Solutions and Turner & Townsend, joined forces to support ongoing work linked to Kirklees Council’s Our Cultural Heart development.

Their mission: help EPIKS keep the track on Kilner Bank clear and accessible for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews.

Hard Graft Followed by a Riverside Tour

After several hours of hands-on graft, volunteers were treated to a guided walk through the tranquil riverside areas around Accu Stadium, led by EPIKS Environmental Ranger Gilly Dukes.

The site is cared for by EPIKS in partnership with Huddersfield Town Football Club and is becoming a valued green space on the edge of the town centre.

Among those taking part was Tom Wimpenny, BAM’s senior site manager for the Our Cultural Heart project, which is now in Phase One, transforming the former Queensgate Market Hall and Piazza into a new library hub, food hall and public square.

Tom said: “It’s been great to get out in the environment and do some work in the community, especially at the minute for BAM as we have such a big project on in Huddersfield town centre.

“It’s lovely for me personally as a local Huddersfield lad to give something back. I appreciate the chance to spend some time in nature, getting a bit of fresh air away from my desk.

“It’s a treat to spend some time working in a different way with people from our supply chain, too.

“Usually when we meet, it’s very formal. This is a great way to get to know the people we work with on a personal level.”

Building a Haven for Wildlife

The volunteering session forms part of EPIKS’ long-term effort to develop the Huddersfield Riverside Nature Park, a growing network of green spaces stretching from Lockwood to Snow Island and out towards Accu Stadium.

Since 2022, EPIKS has been working with volunteers, businesses, schools, colleges, community groups and the University of Huddersfield to rejuvenate riverside habitats and create a thriving urban wildlife corridor.

With maintenance needed year-round, EPIKS regularly welcomes individuals and corporate groups keen to get their hands dirty and support local nature.
