RSPCA appeals for handmade blankets amid rising pet abandonments and cost-of-living pressures

Animal lovers across Yorkshire are being encouraged to put their knitting needles and crochet hooks to good use this winter, as the RSPCA launches a heartfelt appeal to support vulnerable pets.

As part of its Big Give Back to Animals appeal, the charity is calling on the public to create and donate handmade blankets to provide warmth, comfort and security for pets whose owners are struggling during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Supporting Pets Through the Pet Food Bank Partnership

The donated blankets will be distributed through the RSPCA’s Pet Food Bank Partnership, which works alongside food banks and community organisations across the country.

The partnership provides essential supplies such as pet food, toys and cosy bedding to families facing financial hardship, helping to ensure animals are not left without basic care.

The RSPCA says the demand for support continues to grow, with many households finding it increasingly difficult to meet rising living costs while caring for their pets.

A Simple Act of Kindness

Alison Fletcher, the RSPCA’s National Lead for Pet Food Banks, highlighted the importance of community involvement in supporting animal welfare.

“Every pet deserves warmth, comfort and care, especially during winter. Our supporters are incredibly generous, and this activity is a wonderful way for people of all ages and abilities to get involved and help keep more pets safe and warm.”

Those taking part are encouraged to use soft, pet-safe yarns such as wool, acrylic or cotton, and to choose tightly woven patterns to protect animals’ paws.

Rising Abandonment Concerns

The appeal comes amid growing concern about increasing levels of pet abandonment.

The RSPCA reports that abandonment incidents rose by 23 per cent in the first ten months of the year, placing additional pressure on the charity’s frontline services.

The Big Give Back to Animals appeal aims to support these teams while also raising awareness of the challenges many pet owners are currently facing.

Alison Fletcher added: “Sadly, we’ve seen reports of neglect and abandonment surge this year, indicating that many pet owners are struggling. That’s why our Pet Food Bank Partnership is such a vital lifeline – and why small acts of kindness, such as knitting and donating a handmade blanket, can make a real difference.

“Those taking part are encouraged to use soft, pet-safe yarn – such as wool, acrylic or cotton – and tightly woven patterns to keep little paws safe. We’re incredibly grateful to all those looking to knit for animals this Christmas. There’s loads more information about getting involved online.”
