New Research Shows Local Taverns Generate Millions for Community Sport and Social Value
New figures from PubAid reveal that pubs across the UK now raise £40 million each year for community sport, with Yorkshire venues standing out as prime examples of local leadership.
Together, they’ve helped hundreds of players, teams and families stay active, connected and proud of where they live.
A Nationwide Impact Worth Millions
PubAid’s research highlights the scale of pub-led support for sport throughout the country. Across the UK:
-
Pubs raise around £40 million annually for grassroots and community sport, creating an estimated £160 million in social value.
-
62% of pubs actively support local teams and sporting activities.
-
This backing enables 6.7 million community sport sessions each year, reaching roughly 1.7 million people.
-
71% of pub-supported initiatives benefit under-represented groups, including women, older adults, people with disabilities and those with mental health conditions.
-
Despite financial pressures, 67% of pubs say they are doing more for sport now than five years ago.
Keeping Communities Active and Connected
The research underscores that pubs are now among the most influential supporters of grassroots sport in Britain.
Their contributions range from sponsoring kits and donating raffle prizes to hosting training sessions and fundraising events.
On average, each pub raises around £1,300 annually, though a notable four per cent generate more than £5,000.
This support helps deliver more than 6.7 million local sport sessions every year, providing not just opportunities for play, but a sense of identity, confidence and community belonging.
Each pub now facilitates around 240 hours of physical activity annually, showing the scale of their impact.
Championing Inclusivity
More than seven in ten pubs involved in community sport back under-represented groups.
Football remains the most commonly supported activity at 76 per cent, followed by darts, pool, rugby and cricket.
Walking groups, bowls and tennis are also gaining popularity as pubs look to diversify the activities they champion.
Support in All Its Forms
Sixty per cent of pubs sponsor local teams, while 43 per cent offer free space for clubs to meet.
40% provide raffle prizes, food, or drink to support fundraising efforts. Others donate directly to local causes, supply kits and equipment or invest in upgrading facilities to help teams grow.
For landlords, the motivation is about more than sport. Three-quarters say supporting teams strengthens community bonds; nearly half say it creates a more welcoming environment; and four in ten believe it builds pride in the local area. Many publicans also see the benefits to residents’ physical and mental health at a time when loneliness and inactivity are on the rise.
Challenges and Commitment
Rising costs remain a concern, with 68 per cent of pubs saying budgets limit what they can offer. Even so, two in three report that they are now doing more for local sport than they were five years ago. Despite tighter margins, publicans remain determined to keep clubs and teams thriving.
The commitment pays off for pubs too. Nine in ten landlords say supporting sport improves their reputation, boosts midweek footfall and strengthens customer loyalty.
Where Sport Is Made Possible
Across the country — and especially in Yorkshire — every sponsored kit, charity tournament and post-match gathering tells the same story. Pubs aren’t just the places where sport is watched; they’re where it’s made possible. They remain central to powering the people, pride and passion behind Britain’s sporting life.
