RSPCA Young Photographer Awards 2025 opens for entries with new category to document animal stories

The RSPCA Young Photographer Awards has officially opened for entries, inviting talented young photographers in West Yorkshire and across the UK to showcase their creativity and love of animals.

Open to all budding photographers aged 18 years and under, the competition runs until 13 August 2025 and is a unique opportunity to capture the beauty and diversity of the animal kingdom, whether on a camera or mobile device.

A Celebration of Young Talent

Last year’s competition saw over 4,000 entries from children and young people passionate about animals and nature.

Ellie Rothnie, award-winning photographer and photographic guide, returns as a judge for 2025.

She shared her excitement about the competition: “The RSPCA’s Young Photographer Awards is the ultimate celebration of young creative talent.

“Every year, the entries are astounding, and indeed, many winners from this competition have become immensely successful professional photographers.

“I am truly honoured to be a judge again, I can’t wait to see this year’s entries.”

New ‘Documenting Animals’ Category

For 2025, the RSPCA has launched an exciting new category called ‘Documenting Animals’.

This category will challenge young photographers to tell the story of an individual animal or comment on the wider natural world through a series of three photos.

Entrants will also be asked to write 120 words explaining their story and what inspired it.

Andrew Forsyth, RSPCA photographer and competition judge, said: “We’re looking for a positive story that leaves a lasting impression.

“We want the entrants to show that they have thought about the narrative of their images… It’s an opportunity to use your imagination and natural curiosity, and we’re excited to see what our budding young photographers in West Yorkshire come up with.”

A Prestigious Panel and Exciting Prizes

The judging panel includes wildlife photography experts Ellie Rothnie, Andrew Forsyth, Emma Jacobs, and former winner-turned-professional photographer Catriona Parfitt.

Sponsors include Natures Images and Camtraptions, supporting this inspiring event.

Winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony at the Tower of London in December, receiving trophies and a selection of exciting prizes.
