Residents Invited to Question Councillors and Party Leaders Ahead of Polls

A public meeting has been called in Dewsbury as local elections approach, offering residents the chance to question councillors, prospective candidates and party leaders about the future of Dewsbury Sports Centre.

The event, organised by the Reopen Dewsbury Sports Centre Committee, will take place on Sunday 8 March at 1:30 pm at Thornhill Lees Community Centre.

Campaign Born From Closure

The Reopen Dewsbury Sports Centre campaign was formed following the closure of the facility, which previously served families, schools, sports clubs and community groups across Dewsbury and the wider North Kirklees area.

For many residents, the centre was more than a leisure facility. Campaigners say it was a vital community hub that supported physical health, mental wellbeing and youth engagement.

Since its closure, the group has organised petitions, community meetings and public engagement activities, calling for greater transparency, accountability and a clear plan to restore proper leisure provision in the town.

Candidates to Face Questions

With polling day drawing nearer, the Committee says it is essential that voters hear directly from those seeking elected office.

“We want candidates to explain what has been done so far, why decisions were made, and if they are newly standing what they will do to secure the future of leisure provision in our area,” a spokesperson for the Committee said.

“This is about giving residents a fair opportunity to ask questions and make informed decisions before they cast their vote.”

The meeting will feature short addresses from attending representatives, followed by a moderated question-and-answer session with members of the public.

Call for Strong Turnout

Organisers are urging residents to attend in large numbers to demonstrate the strength of feeling within the community.

“This issue affects families, young people and the long-term health of our town.

“The more people who attend, the stronger the message that Dewsbury deserves proper sports and leisure facilities.”
