In a generous display of community spirit, members of Woodsome Hall Golf Club, based in Fenay Bridge, Huddersfield have successfully raised funds for an additional defibrillator to be installed on the course.

This initiative comes in the wake of a recent medical emergency, where a player suffered a serious heart attack while playing.

The quick response, expert care from a playing partner, and the prompt use of a defibrillator from the clubhouse were instrumental in ensuring a positive outcome.

The Wednesday Wastrels, a group of 26 dedicated members, had been fundraising for some time to secure a defibrillator for the course itself.

The recent incident accelerated their efforts, and within weeks, they had collected the necessary funds to cover the £5000 cost of an advanced unit, powered by both solar panels and a wind turbine.

‘Identified a Need’

Richard Williams, representing the group, explained their motivation: “One of our traditions is to hold lunches on significant birthdays, when a member reaches an age ending in 0 or 5.

“As part of our celebrations, we contribute to our charity fund, and we had already identified the need for a defibrillator located some distance from the clubhouse.”

“Following the medical emergency, we realised the urgency of having the defibrillator installed promptly.

“We all donated additional amounts to meet the target, and within four weeks, we had raised the necessary funds, placed the order, and installed the defibrillator.

“While we hope it will never have to be used, its strategic placement by the 14th tee could save crucial minutes in an emergency.”
