West Yorkshire Vision Zero reminds drivers and pedestrians to stay visible as darker evenings increase risks on the roads

Following the clocks going back over the weekend, West Yorkshire Vision Zero is renewing its call for everyone to stay safe and visible on the roads.

The annual clock change marks the start of darker evenings — a time when the region typically sees a rise in both pedestrian casualties and careless driving incidents.

In October 2024, 29 pedestrians were killed or seriously injured on West Yorkshire’s roads.

With night falling earlier, the region’s road safety partnership is urging drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to take extra care and follow its key message: “Be Bright, Be Seen.”

Vision Zero: Aiming for Safer Roads for All

To raise awareness, West Yorkshire Vision Zero has released a new safety video demonstrating examples of good and poor visibility on the roads, highlighting how simple precautions can prevent accidents.

The campaign forms part of the partnership’s mission to eliminate all road deaths and serious injuries in the region.

Alison Lowe OBE, Chair of the West Yorkshire Vision Zero Board and Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, said: “There’s a lot to look forward to at this time of year, and we don’t want anyone to come to harm or have to deal with the devastation of a loved one being hurt.

“Road deaths and serious injuries are avoidable, and by doing simple things like taking extra time to check the road, driving at safe speeds and ensuring your lights are on, you are helping to keep everyone safe.

“We continue to work towards Vision Zero, but importantly, we need everyone’s help to make it a reality.”

Staying Safe on the Roads

As winter approaches, the partnership is reminding everyone to take practical steps to stay safe and visible:

• Check your lights regularly to ensure they are clean and working properly.

• Slow down and adjust speed for darker or wet conditions.

• Wear bright or reflective clothing when walking or cycling.

• Cross safely using dedicated pedestrian crossings where possible.

• Keep vehicles clean, as reflective surfaces improve visibility.

• Report dangerous driving by submitting footage to the police through Operation Snap.

Sign the Vision Zero Pledge

The Vision Zero initiative continues to work towards a future where no one is killed or seriously injured on West Yorkshire’s roads — but achieving that goal depends on everyone’s support.

Residents can show their commitment to safer roads by signing the Vision Zero Pledge, which can also be dedicated in memory of someone affected by a road traffic collision.
