Annual Race for Life at Oakwell Hall honours late staff member and unites community in powerful act of remembrance and fundraising

Birstall Primary Academy in West Yorkshire has once again demonstrated the strength of its school spirit and community unity with its annual Race for Life event, held at the scenic Oakwell Hall this July.

But this year’s run carried a deeper emotional weight, as pupils, staff, and families came together to honour the memory of a much-loved colleague, Mrs Patricia Timberley.

Over the past five years, every pupil at Birstall Primary has taken part in the school’s Race for Life, raising over £7,000 for Cancer Research UK.

The initiative was originally championed and launched by Mrs Timberley, whose passion and drive made the event a much-anticipated annual tradition.

Following her passing in 2024, this year’s race became a heartfelt tribute.

Pupils, parents, staff, and even Mrs Timberley’s family participated in what was described as a moving and inspirational day.

The event served not only as a fundraiser but also as a celebration of her legacy and a testament to the values she instilled in the school community.

A Small School with a Big Heart

Part of the Focus Trust, a Multi-Academy Trust that supports schools at the heart of their communities, Birstall Primary Academy is known for its vision of being a “small school, big heart.”

This ethos was powerfully evident as 180 pupils took to the grounds of Oakwell Hall to run in solidarity, remembrance, and hope.

Principal Mrs Sweryt-Hannam reflected on the day, saying: “We were incredibly proud to see 180 of our pupils take part in this year’s Race for Life, an event that holds deep significance for our school community.

“This year, we ran in memory of a very special member of staff, Mrs Patricia Timberley, who originally began this event many years ago.

“Her legacy continues to inspire us, and over the years, we have now raised a remarkable £7,000 for cancer research and support.

“It truly was a team effort with Pat’s family joining in with the preparations for this event. Parents ran alongside the children, wider families donated generously.

“Pupils showed real determination, resilience, and compassion as they ran through the beautiful grounds of Oakwell Hall, our local historic venue.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our pupils and the wider school community. Together, we ran with one shared purpose: to remember Mrs T and help improve life expectancy for those diagnosed with cancer.

“It’s in moments like this that the strength, kindness, and unity of our small school with a big heart shine through.”

A Lasting Legacy

This year’s event exemplified the power of a single individual’s vision to leave a lasting impact.

It also highlighted the strength of local communities when united by compassion and purpose.

Through laughter, tears, and shared memories, Birstall Primary Academy’s Race for Life was more than a run, it was a celebration of life, love, and legacy.

The school hopes their story will inspire others and draw attention to the positive work being done in schools across the region to support both charitable causes and one another.
