Try out e-bikes, trikes, smoothie bikes and more at Dewsbury’s inclusive ‘Go Active’ day on Sunday 13 July
A fun-filled celebration of active travel is coming to Crow Nest Park, Dewsbury, on Sunday 13 July, and everyone is invited.
From 10am to 3pm, families, friends and individuals of all ages and abilities can explore a wide range of bikes and enjoy free activities as part of the Go Active event.
Organised by Walk, Wheel, Ride Kirklees, the event will showcase a huge variety of bicycles to try, from trikes and tandems to e-bikes and even smoothie bikes.
Best of all, it’s completely free to attend, with no charge for any activities (though a few such as the e-bike trials require advance booking).
Check out the Facebook event page here.
Wheels for All: Inclusive Cycling for Every Body
The event is designed to be inclusive and accessible. Whether you’re a confident cyclist or just getting started, there’s something for everyone, including wheelchair bikes, hand cycles, balance bikes for children, and e-cargo bikes for carrying little ones or shopping.
Helmets will be provided where needed, and experienced coaches will be on hand to offer guidance, support and tips to help boost confidence.
Activities for Children
Children will have the chance to test out balance bikes and trikes, with friendly instructors ready to help them learn to ride or gain confidence on two (or three) wheels.
Book an E-Bike Test Ride
For those curious about cycling with electric assistance, EPIKS will be running bookable e-bike rides, a perfect way to try out hill-friendly commuting.
A range of e-cargo bikes will also be available to test for anyone thinking about ditching the car for the school run or shopping trips.
Keep Your Bike Safe with Free Registration
Own a bike already? Bring it along and get it registered for free with the Bike Register, helping to prevent theft and increase the chances of recovery if stolen.
The Neighbourhood Policing Team will be at the event between 10am and 2pm to apply a personalised barcode and provide security tips.
A Celebration of Active Travel in Kirklees
The event is part of a wider mission by Environmental Projects in Kirklees (EPIKS) to encourage people to walk, wheel and cycle more.
“Their active travel hubs in Huddersfield, the Holme Valley and Batley and Spen support residents in exploring lower-carbon, healthier ways to get around.
Councillor Beverley Addy, Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “I love to see events like this, especially when they are taking place in the heart of communities like our fantastic parks.
“What a brilliant example of communities thriving, with local organisations working alongside the council to help people change their lives for the better.
“I know it is going to be a great day out – it is also an opportunity for people of all ages to try out new modes of transport and think about how it might work for them. I hope to see you there!
“It is the simple things we take for granted, but walking or cycling for part of your journey might give you the chance to be closer to nature, de-stress for the day, or get some gentle exercise which we know does us all the world of good.”
Beth Lomas, Active Travel Manager at EPIKS, added: “This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to try out some fun, free activities in the beautiful setting of the park.
“Here at EPIKS we want to make walking, wheeling and cycling accessible to everyone and encourage people to have a go no matter your age or experience.
“All activities are free, under instruction and helmets provided where needed. Staff will be on hand to provide information and answer any questions you might have about all modes of active travel. So come along and have a go!”
The Go Active event is supported by Kirklees Council and funded by the UK Government through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA). WYCA is also supporting further events this summer with Everybody’s Cycling across West Yorkshire.
