Thousands of Kirklees Families Supported by Affordable Food Hubs Amid Cost-of-Living Pressures

The Bread and Butter Thing delivers hundreds of thousands of meals while strengthening local communities

Families across Kirklees are benefiting from access to affordable, nutritious food through The Bread and Butter Thing, helping households manage ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

Over the past year, the service has supported thousands of residents by making everyday essentials more affordable and improving access to healthy food, easing pressure on household budgets at a time of rising costs.

Growing Impact Across the District

The Bread and Butter Thing operates 10 food club hubs across Kirklees, supporting 8,502 members and delivering the equivalent of 917,309 meals in the last year alone.

By offering low-cost food packs filled with fresh produce and essentials, the service has helped families stretch their budgets further while maintaining a healthy, balanced diet.

Members Report Strong Benefits

Members report high levels of satisfaction and impact from using the food clubs, rating the service:

8.4 out of 10 for saving money
7.4 out of 10 for reducing worry about feeding their family
7.3 out of 10 for supporting healthier eating, including more fruit and vegetables

Food clubs operate from familiar and trusted community venues, including schools, community centres and church halls.

Membership is free, with no referrals or crisis thresholds required, allowing anyone to join and shop with dignity and choice.

Volunteers at the Heart of the Service

In 2025, local volunteers contributed an impressive 17,907 hours to help run weekly food club sessions and strengthen community connections.

Members rated Bread and Butter’s wider community impact at 9.07 out of 10, reflecting a strong belief that the model benefits entire neighbourhoods, not just individual households.

Cabinet Member Praises Community Impact

Councillor Beverley Addy, Cabinet Member for Public Health, said: “Kirklees residents who shop with The Bread and Butter Thing saved a combined total of over £741,000 in 2025 – a vital boost during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

“Food hubs are at the heart of local communities in Berry Brow, Crosland Moor, Cowlersley, Dalton, Deighton, Thornhill Lees, Chickenley, Heckmondwike, Liversedge, and Batley.

“I encourage residents to keep using these hubs in 2026 to make even greater savings and improve food diversity.

“Around 80% of Bread and Butter food shopping packs are made up of fresh fruit, vegetables, and chilled produce, delivering nutritional benefit and helping families enjoy a more varied, healthier diet every week.”

Nationally, The Bread and Butter Thing supports tens of thousands of households each week through its growing network of food clubs, helping families eat better while reducing reliance on emergency food provision.
