It is hard to believe that a quarter-century has passed since a small crowd gathered in a Huddersfield car park around a makeshift beach made from a few bags of sand.

From those humble beginnings in 2002, the Deighton Carnival has grown into one of the most beloved, vibrant pillars of the Kirklees cultural calendar. Celebrating its landmark 25th anniversary, the carnival stands as a testament to community resilience, joy, and the rich tapestry of multicultural Huddersfield.

From Car Park Beginnings to a Cultural Legacy

Founded by CEO and organiser Howard Belafonte, the carnival was born from a desire to bring people together following local regeneration efforts in the late 1990s. Drawing on his parents’ Jamaican heritage, Belafonte and the early organisers infused the neighbourhood with the traditions of Caribbean carnival culture—sound systems, vibrant costumes, and incredible food.

What started with just 200 people now regularly draws over 10,000 visitors to the Deighton Centre. It has evolved into a massive multi-cultural celebration where generations of families come together to dance, eat, and connect.

The 2026 Milestone Celebration

The 25th-anniversary event promises to be the grandest carnival yet. The Deighton Centre fields will transform into a buzzing hub of sensory delights, anchored by the beloved Carnival Procession as it weaves its colourful way through the Ashbrow ward.

What to Expect at the Quarter-Century Milestone:

• The Sounds: Powerful local sound systems, live stage shows showcasing local talent, and top-tier guest DJs bringing the vibes.

• The Sights: Dazzling performance troupes, including the Whitacre Close Troupe, the Rhythm Carnival Troupe, and local gymnastics and dance academies.

• The Sports: The annual, highly competitive 5-a-side football tournament alongside basketball, netball, and table tennis showcases.

• The Feast: A massive array of food stalls serving authentic flavours and street food from around the globe.

• The Family Fun: Giant inflatable slides, circus workshops, face painting, and traditional funfair rides to keep kids of all ages entertained

To mark this incredible milestone, local primary school children have been working as “budding journalists” to document the event’s history, and a National Lottery-funded project titled “Deighton Heritage – A Carnival Legacy” is underway to preserve twenty-five years of memories, photos, and stories in the West Yorkshire Archives.
