Huddersfield celebrated the June 2, 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II with large-scale community events and local festivities.

1953 Huddersfield Area Events:

• Community Feasts: Local festivities included a barbecue of 500 fowls, ox and lamb-roasting, pageants, and a “mammoth pie” in the district.
• Denby Dale Celebrations: The village hosted massive bonfires and fireworks, with 96-year-old local resident Mary Ann Kenyon selected to light the fire.
• Emley Village Pageant: Residents in Emley hosted a historical pageant in homage to the Royal grant given by King Henry III.
• Children’s Events: Local schools and parish groups hosted garden parties, such as the children’s gathering at Holmfirth Cricket Field. Many local schoolchildren were presented with commemorative Bibles and drinking glasses to mark the occasion (e.g., at Crosland Moor School).
• Rugby League Triumph: While celebrations were widespread on June 2, the wider mood in the town was ecstatic following Huddersfield’s (15-10) victory over St Helens in the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final at Wembley in April.
