Kirklees Council has planned a new park in Dewsbury town centre but asks the public for their views on the plans.
The new public park is a central feature of the Dewsbury Blueprint. It would be at the heart of Dewsbury. The aim is for it to be a place where communities can socialise and enjoy the outdoors in the town centre.
Plans are still at an early stage. The council have constructed design concepts but seek public input on the design of the park.
Where will the park be built?
The council will build the park on Longcauseway in Dewsbury town centre. Plans to build on Longcauseway arc back to 2009, the designs show the parks spanning the area between Dewsbury Town Hall, Longcauseway and the Princess of Wales shopping centre. It was identified as a prime location for a new public park. The site is on an old railway which has influenced the design concepts so far for the park.
Designs have focused on themes of circulation, connection and movement.
There are two potential sixes for the new public park. First, a park that only takes up Longcauseway and the Memorial Gardens. The second option is a larger design which includes the site of the existing Customer Service centre.

“An exciting step forward”
David Shepherd, Strategic Director for Growth and Regeneration, said:
“This consultation for Dewsbury Town Park is an exciting step forward in our ambitious plans to bring more activity into the town centre, make it more attractive and improve accessibility, as set out in the Dewsbury Blueprint. Outside space is vital to the improved wellbeing of our residents, commuters and visitors. A green and inviting haven in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the town centre will provide a vital link to nature.
The ultimate goal for the new park is to improve the town centre experience for residents and visitors alike. It is for that reason that I would encourage as many people as possible to complete the survey and share their thoughts on the designs.”
