We continue our series of sponsored articles about Northern Gas Networks this week with a snapshot of how the organisation continues to provide for our region.
Ofgem, the government regulator for gas and electricity markets in Great Britain, ensures that energy providers continue to be effective, efficient and ethical in their operations.
The Ofgem price control framework, the RIIO (Revenue using Incentives to deliver Innovation and Outputs), rewards companies that provide fantastic service to their customers, as well as issuing financial penalties to those who fail to do so.
In other words, the better an energy company performs, the better off they will be financially.
In 2018/19, Northern Gas Networks were able to exceed all of their key regulatory targets and incurred zero penalties from Ofgem as a result.
In addition to this, they received approximately £10m in rewards due to their strong performance in a number of essential areas, including:
- Great customer service
- Meeting customers’ demands for gas all year round (with minimal disruptions)
- Beating their pipe leakage targets for the year (reducing the build-up of harmful greenhouse gases)
- And working with their stakeholders to deliver shared goals.
As a result of these rewards, Northern Gas Networks are able to keep the price of their services down to a minimum, whilst continuing to provide work for their 1,300 members of staff across the north.
At Kirklees Local TV, we are proud to promote a regional organisation that serves our community and our economy, particularly at a time when both are facing the continued challenges posed by Covid-19.

Northern Gas Networks delivers gas to 2.7 million homes and businesses in the North East, Northern Cumbria and much of Yorkshire. They employ 1,300 people, as well as providing regular work to approximately 800 contractors.
Kirklees Local TV is working in partnership with NGN to highlight promote the work they do across the region.
