A local theatre group based in Longwood set to bring their show, Into the Woods, to the newly refurbished Lawrence Batley Theatre (LBT).
Performers of Longwood Amateur Operatic Society (LAOS) are keen to dive into performing again after a long wait following the Pandemic.
For the past few weeks, LAOS have been rehearsing to bring the first show performed in the newly refurbished Lawrence Batley Theatre, Into the Woods.
Into the Woods is the Tony Award-winning book and score by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim, taking its viewers through a timeless yet relevant piece, a rare modern classic.
The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, with the main characters being taken from Little Red Riding Hood, Jack & the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella to name just a few.
The musical is tied together by a story involving a childless Baker and his wife, and their quest to begin a family, their interaction with a Witch who has placed a curse on them, and the other storybook characters they meet during their journey.
LAOS was founded in 1924 and have been providing live theatre in Huddersfield for almost 100 years. They have performed at various venues, including Venn Street Arts Centre, Longwood Mechanics Hall and the LBT.
‘Rollercoaster of Emotions’
After five years away from the LBT, due to financial difficulties, 2021 sees LAOS’s return to the venue.
Zoe Roebuck, LAOS Choreographer, said: “The show will take the audience through a journey of favourite fairy-tale characters entwined with humour and sadness – making the audience ride a rollercoaster of emotions.
“Performers of the show are ecstatic to be back again, breathing such life and passion into the show.”
‘Support Local Talent’
Following the Pandemic, many performer’s livelihoods have been affected.
Sophie Patel, Marketing and Projects Executive, Huddersfield BID, said: “We at the BID are keen to support Lawrence Batley Theatre and performing arts.
“I am certainly looking forward to seeing this show. It is really important for the public to come together and support local talent.”
The show runs from Tuesday 14 September 2021 – Saturday 18 Sep 2021. Tickets are available at the Lawrence Batley Theatre and on their website.
For many, this will be a welcome return to the theatre after 18 months.
