Jordan Wimpenny’s Huddersfield Town Women side continue their 100% record in pre-season with a 5-0 thumping over Newcastle United Women at the Stafflex Arena.
The side made it five wins out of five in their pre-season fixtures ahead of the FA WNL season.
Sarah Danby and Lucy Sowerby both scored a brace in the game which saw Town come out on top rather easily.
Last seasons top scorer for the Terriers, Lucy Sowerby, was ecstatic with the brace, saying: “It was great to get another big win against a tough opponent.
“Getting on the scoresheet again was nice too so I want to keep this momentum building into the first game of the league season against Fylde.”
The scoring started early with Sarah Danby scoring with just a few minutes on the clock with an unmarked header at the back post.
Kate Mallin assisted the initial goal and then assisted the second in a similar fashion. She got to the byline before fizzing in a teasing cross that was met by Sowerby to make it 2-0.
Newcastle were fresh off beating their local rivals Sunderland 1-0 a couple of weeks ago, but they could not continue their form due to the sheer quality of Town.
Comfortable possession followed the second goal and Town got their third through Sowerby again who struck the ball sweetly into the top right corner to give her side a three-goal cushion.
Mallin got yet another assist as she crossed the ball to Danby who places an exquisite volley into the goal.
Laura Elford also got in on the act with the fifth goal of the game to make it 5-0. She tapped the ball into an empty net after substitute Serena Fletcher assisted after some unselfish play.
Elford had notched seven goals in the previous two matches ahead of the game, so it was not a shock to see her get on the scoresheet yet again.
It was quite the birthday present for Manager Jordan Wimpenny, who commented on the emphatic win, saying: “It was another top performance from the players. Their commitment and application keeps on improving and that can only be a good thing.
“We kept another clean sheet – that’s four in five games now – so that’s an area that we keep improving week in, week out.
“Were full of confidence and scoring lots of goals so if we keep on working hard in training, we’ll be ready for the season to start against Fylde on the 20th.”
