What is the ‘High-Performance Vehicle Renting (regulation)’ motion?
Holly Lynch the Labour MP for Halifax called for the government to regulate antisocial behaviour. This includes the hiring out of high-performance vehicles and encouraging an exploration of other ways to curb antisocial behaviour. Other suggestions are mandating the use of black boxes, which record evidence of speeding. Additionally, raisin the minimum age requirement for hiring high-performance vehicles was another suggestion.
Before calling on the government to act, Holly Lynch said, “…I receive hundreds of emails and phone calls from local people every year concerned about high powered cars, which have often been hired over the course of a weekend, and driven recklessly and irresponsibly around neighbours, often late at night.
“We have worked together with local and national partners to present law changes which would force hire car companies to take some responsibility for the way these types of vehicle are driven, and prevent keys being passed from driver to driver in a way which puts members of the public at risk.”
What is a high-performance vehicle?
A high-performance vehicle includes vehicles that offer high speed and power. Often the car’s engine would have a higher than usual potential for power compared to the car’s weight. Sometimes referred to as ‘turbocharged’ or ‘supercharged’ engines.’
West Yorkshire MP’s support
MP Holly Lynch’s calls for motion have been supported by other West Yorkshire MPs including Tracy Brabin, Labour MP for Batley and Spen. Tracy Brabin, who is also a candidate in the running for Mayor of West Yorkshire, said, “…today and intends to work with MPs and West Yorkshire Police to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries that have been caused on our roads.
“It is so important that we tackle anti-social driving and ensure that people can’t just hire a high-performance vehicle for the weekend and drive dangerously and cause a nuisance in residential areas.
“As mayor, I want to ensure that everyone feels safe on our streets and can have quiet enjoyment in their homes. For too long communities have had to put up with dangerous and anti-social driving. The blight needs to end and we can only do this through tightening regulations.”
