The Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA) shares an exciting collaboration with renowned sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. Together, they will bring a captivating new attraction to the enchanting sister isles of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, unveiling a stunning sculpture park amidst the crystal-clear waters of Carriacou.
This innovative venture aims to merge the realms of art and environmental consciousness, addressing the pressing issues of global warming and the impact of climate change on our precious marine ecosystems and coastal communities.
Randall Dolland, Chairman of the GTA, expressed his utmost enthusiasm for this new initiative, stating: “We are thrilled about this upcoming project. Creating a sculpture park that combines socially responsible art with the breathtaking beauty of our nation’s waters, nestled near the Grenadines, will shine a brilliant spotlight on Carriacou. It will undoubtedly feature prominently in our destination marketing campaigns.”
The forthcoming sculpture park is a testament to the GTA’s unwavering dedication to the growth and promotion of the sister islands. Before this endeavour, the GTA conducted stakeholder consultations on Carriacou and Petite Martinique, underscoring the importance of community engagement and sustainable tourism practices.
DeCaires Taylor, renowned for his groundbreaking underwater sculptures that function as artificial coral reefs, is honoured to lend his expertise to this project. He expressed: “The fusion of art and environmental conservation holds the power to educate, inspire, and provoke change, which will captivate visitors while raising awareness about the urgent need to protect our oceans.”
The Honourable Tevin Andrews, Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government, affirms the multifaceted benefits of the new sculpture park in Carriacou. He explains: “The installation of this sculpture park will bring numerous advantages: increased visitation, enriched cultural heritage, preserved marine life, and job creation, ultimately stimulating the economy.”
It’s noteworthy that mainland Grenada is already home to the world’s first underwater sculpture park and remains one of the island’s most popular attractions. The forthcoming sculpture park in Carriacou promises to be a shining example of eco-conscious tourism and artistic wonder, leaving a lasting impression on locals and visitors alike.
