A few parks across Kirklees will see an investment of over £200,000 in their tennis courts due to funding from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).
Kirklees Council and LTA recently agreed to a partnership where nineteen courts across four parks will be refurbished and upgraded.
Tennis courts at Wilton Park, Batley; Firth Park, Heckmondwike; Greenhead Park, Huddersfield; and Crow Nest Park, Dewsbury, will be refurbished and upgraded.
The project will see £206,427 of investment from the LTA Tennis Foundation’s Park Tennis Project. The LTA will deliver the project with support from Kirklees’ Parks and Greenspaces Team.
Refurbishments will include improvements to existing surfaces, repainting markings, net replacement, and fence repairs.
Work on the sites has begun (dates listed below) and is due to finish by late September.
- Wilton Park 15th July – 20th September 2024
- Crow Nest Park 15th July – 20th September 2024
- Greenhead Park 22nd July – 23rd August 2024
- Firth Park 29th July – 23rd August 2024
Councillor Yusra Hussain, Cabinet Member for Culture and Greener Kirklees said to Kirklees Together: “This is a fantastic investment in our court facilities within our parks and I welcome the opportunities the refurbished courts will provide. Hopefully it will encourage children and adults to get active, providing physical and mental health and wellbeing benefits to all who use them.”
“This significant investment will ensure Kirklees residents and our communities have access to high quality court facilities for many years to come, ensuring tennis can remain in our parks well into the future.”
Julie Porter, Chief Operating Officer at the LTA, said to Kirklees Together: “We are delighted to be working with Kirklees Council to improve their park tennis facilities and provide more opportunities for anyone to pick up a racket and get active. This investment is part of the UK Government and LTA’s Parks Tennis Project and will mean that courts will be available for people to use for years to come. We will also be working closely with Kirklees Council to ensure that the local community have a range of accessible opportunities to get on court and open up our sport to many more people.”
The project is part of a nationwide investment by the LTA Tennis Foundation, delivered by the LTA, to refurbish public tennis courts and open up the sport to more people.
