Renowned Olympian and Commonwealth champion, Chris Cook, has thrown his support behind the campaigners working to reopen Dewsbury Sports Centre, which was closed in September 2023 by Kirklees Council citing high levels of investment.
Hailing from humble beginnings himself, like many residents of Dewsbury, Cook credits swimming for instilling in him a thriving spirit and an aspirational mindset. The closure of Dewsbury Sports Centre raises concerns not only for the local community but also for other communities facing similar challenges.
Chris Cook said: “I have worked with high school students in the area, and I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact that sports facilities can have on their lives.”
Cook, emphasised the pivotal role that swimming and leisure centres play as community hubs. Beyond fostering growth mindsets, these facilities serve as crucial resources for communities. Reflecting on his journey, Cook revealed that he was inspired to pursue swimming as a serious sport at the age of 9 after witnessing the Olympics.

Chris Cook added: “It’s a real shame these opportunities are becoming less available for our young people and communities.”
“More communities are also being impacted by similar closures. I would urge the government to prioritise funding to these valuable spaces where health and wellbeing would reduce a huge level of stress on the NHS.”
In addition to being community hubs, swimming and leisure centres contribute to public health and alleviate the burden on healthcare services. Cook’s call to prioritise funding underscores the importance of safeguarding these spaces for the physical and mental wellbeing of communities.
As an esteemed athlete and advocate, Chris Cook’s endorsement adds significant weight to the campaign for the reopening of Dewsbury Sports Centre.
