Huddersfield’s New Street is undergoing a significant transformation as part of the ongoing efforts to revitalise the town centre.
The latest development involves the installation of three unique vertical planters, recently erected on the thoroughfare.
The objective of this initiative is to reshape New Street into a dynamic ‘garden street’ that provides inviting green spaces for social interaction.
Kirklees Council says this transformation will be is complemented by strategically placed seating areas and captivating artistic pieces.
These planters allow vegetation to grow upward, forming tree-like structures that seamlessly blend with the urban environment.
The design aims to embrace natural elements while prioritising pedestrian flow, ensuring ample room for movement and shopping along the street.
Coupled with the previously completed granite flowerbeds, the planters are scheduled to bloom with seasonal foliage in the near future, enhancing the visual appeal of the street.

Circling the Square
The artist behind these distinctive installations is Tim Ward of ‘Circling the Square’ fame.
Crafted from durable steel, Ward’s creations stand at an impressive height of 12 meters, adding a striking vertical dimension to the street.
Each planter features a unique theme, contributing to the rich tapestry of the city’s heritage and identity.
The first planter draws inspiration from Huddersfield’s topography, aptly named ‘Contours,’ with its lattice structure mirroring the geographical features of the area.
The second planter, themed ‘Waterways,’ pays homage to the city’s aquatic history, while the third, ‘Commerce,’ honors its textile industry legacy through a thread-like design.
‘New Energy’
Speaking on the new planters, Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Growth & Regeneration, said: “It’s great to see work continue on New Street with the addition of these planters, specifically designed for the space by artist Tim Ward.
“Not only are these planters going to add some greenery to our town centres, they also bring with them art and culture – which will only be celebrated further in the future, with features like the embossed poem by Poet Laureate Simon Armitage.
“Through the Huddersfield Blueprint, the development of New Street is bringing a new energy to the town centre which will both increase footfall and, in turn, generate business growth.”
