In the first event of its kind at Oakwell Hall in Birstall, on Saturday, 24 June, battlefield archaeologist Warwick Louth will be leading a guided walk of the nearby battlefield and giving a lecture on 17thCentury warfare.
The events can be enjoyed individually although there is a discount for buying tickets for both.
The walk across the Adwalton Moor battlefield will start from the Oakwell Hall Country Park Visitor Centre, Nova Lane, Birstall, at 10.30am and will last roughly two hours. Reproduction soldier’s kit will be on view and some weapons will be demonstrated.
The lecture, entitled ‘Organised Chaos’, is being held in the Fieldhead Room within the visitor centre courtyard and will start at 1.30pm. It will last around 45minutes and will include a question and answer session. Refreshments will be served.
Warwick Louth specialises in battlefields of the English Civil War period. After a degree in Archaeological Practice from the University of Wales, he did a Masters in Conflict Archaeology at the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology at the University of Glasgow.
His study focus is now on the archaeology, history and preservation of fields of conflict. He has written a book ‘The Arte Militaire’ (there will be a chance during the day to buy signed copies) and is the Archaeological Advisor to the Scottish Battlefield Trust.
Tickets for adults cost £5 for the walk or lecture/ or £8 for both events. Tickets for students cost £4 each/ or £7 for both. Tickets can be purchased at the Visitor Centre, Oakwell Hall Country Park, Nova Lane, Birstall. Pre-booking is recommended as numbers will be limited.
Suitable footwear is needed for the guided walk and those booking both events are advised to bring lunch; there is also a cafe on site.
