In December 2022, Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL) made the decision to temporarily close three sports facilities in Huddersfield.
Batley, Colne Valley and Deighton’s communities were greatly affected and much action has taken place since. The leisure facilities and the industry as a whole were facing financial challenges during and since the pandemic and raising energy costs.
After weeks of campaigning by the communities affected, including the Deighton Sports arena group taking legal action against KAL, the plans for what will happen with these centres will be posted to the public on Monday 13 February.
According to reports, the plans are for the Colne Valley Swimming Pool to fully reopen, while the Deighton Sports Arena will reopen with some services limited, and Batley Baths are set to permanently close.
‘No Final Decisions’
When approached for a comment, Councillor Paul Davies said: “When the three facilities closed in December, we said we would work with Kirklees Active Leisure on their future plans.
“Despite the difficult financial circumstances, the council is proposing to provide a support package that will give KAL options in the next financial year.
“Those plans will be published by KAL on Monday and they will be engaging with customers and members on them. No final decisions will be taken until the affected communities have had their say.”
