David Tindle RA is amongst the most renowned British figurative painters of his generation. Born in Huddersfield in April 1932, he held his first exhibition in London whilst still only nineteen years old, and from that point his career and reputation developed quite rapidly.
His first solo show was held in 1954 at the Piccadilly Gallery, London. Whilst in London, Tindle befriended a circle of artists that included Francis Bacon, John Craxton, Lucian Freud, John Minton and Keith Vaughan who influenced his work stylistically and technically, as can be seen in paintings from the 1950s and 1960s included in this exhibition.
David was elected Royal Academician in 1979 (ARA 1973) and was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Art in 1981. He has been married three times, and has nine children
He has lived in England, France and Italy where he now resides.
The exhibition at Huddersfield Art Gallery, Princess Alexandra Walk, Huddersfield runs until Saturday 4 February 2017.
The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 4pm, and is closed on Sunday.
